Notice what the weather was doing
If water appears almost at once during a heavy downpour, say so. If it takes several hours of steady rain before the stain grows, mention that instead. Wind direction can also be useful, especially on exposed roof slopes.
Look for fresh damp in the loft
If there is safe boarded access, check the felt, rafters and insulation. Fresh wetness usually tells you more than an old brown mark that has been there for years.
Follow the water upwards
Rain can run down felt, along timber or across masonry before it drops into the room. The actual opening may be well above the ceiling stain.
Give wet materials time to dry
After the roof is repaired, plaster and timber may stay damp for a while. What matters is whether new rain makes the area wetter again.
